This little surf tale does not have epic barrels, gnarly sections or a hard line up. It does have fun sized waves, reef, mushrooms, clouds, mountains, islands and calling to the gods for waves like a chicken!
Oh gla gla gla gla gla gla….So we negotiated a price to rent longboards for half a day and surfed fun two footers with the odd one that had a fun long section. The mellow crowd that took us by surprise at Gili T. Easy access to mushrooms abound and fun warm tropical waves at a fickle island reef was too good of an option not to roll the dice. As Daz said: ‘it would be hard to drown in these conditions!’ So we saw old mate, drank some muddy earth tasting concoction with a hint of juice and sprite, and away we went……zoom zoom a zoom zoom zoom!
I was hoping for a mind melting experience that could show me some universal insights four months out from having my first child with my fiancé. It was a classic lesson perhaps of it being a trip not in the same hemisphere of how I intended, but it being its own experience which perhaps was what was needed at the time! (The fiend part of brain says: ‘whatever hippy they were just dud shrooms!’) Anyhow, after 45 mins or so, that tingle creeping pulse of heightened awareness and fixation on clouds and the water and a big smile incasing itself on your soul appeared… oh yes and the familiar gut rumble, things were happening baby!
Waves came along and the connection to the moment seemed stronger. Too much fun! Tropical rain came and dumped then it all went away! Out the back several locals made a sound somewhere between a chook cluck and a slow tap drip. I asked what this was about and they said they make this sound to call the waves! 90 minutes in and feeling warm and universal bobbing out the back with locals making a chook cluck tap drip sound seemed both ridiculous in its absurdity but simultaneously made complete and utter sense!.... So we did what any other mortal would do who looks for more….we clucked away!
